Dr. Walter Clore, David Lake, Mike and Karen Sauer began experimenting at Red Willow in 1973. Karen’s family wanted to supplement traditional farm crops. They evaluated what varietals would grow best in the hot, arid climate and sloped hillsides of the Yakima Valley above the Missoula flood plain. Today it is one of the most iconic vineyard sites, introducing Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese varietals to name a few. The 2015 vintage in Eastern Washington is arguably the hottest to date. The blistering conditions advanced every aspect of the season, with bud break, bloom and harvest occurring three weeks ahead of historical records. Thankfully after 2 previous hot vintages, vines, growers and winemakers were prepared. Dark eggplant blends to a rim of mulberry. Subtle vanilla and mulled plum meld with ripe berries, rich, blackberry liquor and intricate barrel spices. Red and black fruits lead the weighted, lingering mouthfeel and sweet, juicy finish. This rich, balanced beauty will pair beautifully for the next 5-8 years.
